SOCOM 4 Bomb Squad Revealed, Beta Release Details

+ Posted by Chris Roper // Community Specialist, Zipper Interactive

Competitive multiplayer has always been the core of the SOCOM franchise, and SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs takes it further than ever before with modes and options that both new recruits and veterans alike will enjoy. We’ve previously covered three of our four competitive modes — Suppression, Last Defense and Uplink — and today we’re excited to unveil our fourth mode, Bomb Squad.

In Bomb Squad, Insurgents have planted a number of bombs around the map and the Spec Ops team must defuse them all before time runs out. What makes Bomb Squad special is that it features the unique Bomb Technician character, played by one member of the Spec Ops team, who is charged with defusing the explosives. He carries both an automatic shotgun and a mobile grenade launcher and is very heavily armored, making him a deadly force on his own; that said, the technician is still an open target any time he turns his back to defuse Insurgent bombs. Succeeding in Bomb Squad requires tactics, teamwork, patience and confidence to get the job done, all pillars of the overall SOCOM experience.

When can you get your hands on Bomb Squad, you ask? Well, you’ll be able to try out all four of our modes on two maps in our upcoming beta! The SOCOM 4 Multiplayer Beta will include each of the game’s competitive multiplayer modes — Suppression, Last Defense, Uplink and Bomb Squad —
all playable on the maps “Port Authority” and “Assault & Battery”. And of course, you’ll be able to play each of our modes in either of their Standard or Classic variants.

The SOCOM 4 Multiplayer Beta will roll out in four separate phases. It’ll begin with a small, private group and then expand weekly from there until it’s freely available to everyone! Here’s the schedule for each of the beta’s rollout phases:

    • On March 15th, a private beta goes live. We’ll be contacting eligible players soon.
    • Beginning March 22nd, PlayStation Plus members will gain access to the beta.
    • On March 29th, anyone with a beta code included with Killzone 3 gains entry.
    • Starting April 5th, the beta will be freely downloadable to anyone via PlayStation Network.

The beta is scheduled to run until April 13th, at which point the servers will be taken down in preparation of SOCOM 4′s retail release on April 19th!

Zipper Interactive Reveals Operational Intel for SOCOM 4 Beta

Zipper Interactive made it clear earlier this year that SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs will be in beta status for the month leading up to release. Gamers who purchased Killzone 3 received a code to join, and the beta phases and dates were revealed just over a day ago. But what will the beta include?

Dunham, a Senior Community Manager at Zipper Interactive, released an official FAQ on the SOCOM 4 forums which answers many of the questions regarding the beta that you may have. See the list of questions and answers below.

Q: Will the clan-matching system be available in the beta?
A: It will be available, yes.

Q: Can we create custom rooms in the beta?
A: No, you can’t create custom rooms in the beta.

Q: Will the beta have a party system?
A: No, there isn’t a party system available for the beta.

Q: Are the available times to play the SOCOM 4 beta limited?
A: There is no time limit, but we will limit what games modes are available each day. We’ll publish a schedule in the near feature.

Q: Is the beta is 3D-capable?
A: Don’t know this yet, still considering our options. Same with Sharp Shooter and PlayStation Move support.

Q: How many people are invited to the private beta?
A: We’re not revealing how many people we’re inviting, sorry.

Q: I want to be in the private beta, how do I get in?
A: Invitees have already been identified; Even so, Chris and I do plan on doing special promotions and code giveaways for those who aren’t on the original list

Q: What modes are available for play?
A: All four game modes are available to play in the beta: Bomb Squad, Last Defense, Suppression and Uplink. Additionally, all four game types will have “Standard” and “Classic” versions

Q: Which maps will we play?
A: There will be two to choose from – Port Authority and Assault and Battery. Port Authority is a naval port filled with equipment and shipping containers, while Assault and Battery is what remains of a WWII-era coastal fort that has since been abandoned.

Q: If I’m in the private beta, will I continue to play into the next phase?
A: Yes. Once you’re in the beta, you’re in it and not getting out.

Q: Will any of my stats or character progression carry over to the final game?
A: No. We want everyone to be on a level playing field on launch day (think of your early practice as your carry-over)

Two maps, four game modes, clan-matches, and the potential for 3D and Move support? Now that’s how a beta is done. If you’re wondering when you’ll be able to get your hands on the beta, check out our beta article. Either way, start counting, as SOCOM 4 is releasing on April 19th, just in time for you to enjoy Easter candy and some tactical military warfare.

SOCOM 4 FOOTAGE! SXSW SONY EVENT - AUSTIN

Thank you SONY for a great event highlighting SOCOM 4 in Austin. I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed your free food & open bar. Feliz

I had the pleasure of meeting numerous longtime SOCOM fans and several SONY staff. The atmosphere and the gaming was an awesome experience and I look forward to future events at SXSW and with SONY.

Below you will find the archive of the footage I captured during the event. Here is a list of each video and what it contains...

    1.) 11 Kill Streak!

    2.) Classic Suicide & A Claymore
A short clip of Classic Mode and one of my "epic" grenade tosses. (Yes, that's me in the video griping about the grenades.)
There is also some zoomed-in footage of a claymore and the green trip lasers.

    3.) Bomb Squad Brawl
Highlights the all new Bomb Squad game mode, including a round as the Bomb Technician.

4.) Luke, Yer Such A NOOB!
    I picked up the controller.....and embarassed myself.....again.
But at least you get to see 12 minutes of raw gameplay Feliz

5.) Interviews With Two Longtime Fans
I interview two SOCOM 1/2 "vets" and fellow forum posters for some in depth feedback regarding their play-test experience

And a few other surprises as well. Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow.

SOCOM 4: Private Beta Schedule (March 15-March 21)
Posted by Chris Roper, Community Specialist, Zipper Interactive
    Beta Program SOCOM 4

Everyone here at Zipper Interactive is proud to say that today is the first day of the SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs multiplayer beta! As previously announced, our multiplayer beta will be rolling out in four stages with the invite-only private phase beginning today. PlayStation Plus members gain access next week on March 22, while beta codes included with Killzone 3 become active on March 29. Finally, the beta will be available to everyone via the PlayStation Store starting April 5 until its conclusion on April 13.

The multiplayer beta includes two maps, Port Authority and Assault & Battery, playable in all four of SOCOM 4's multiplayer modes:

    * Suppression: The SOCOM take on team deathmatch.
    * Last Defense: Capture controls points, discover the enemy base and destroy it.
    * Uplink: Steal enemy data and deliver it to your base.
    * Bomb Squad: Defend your bomb technician while he disarms enemy explosives.

Each of these modes will be playable in both the Standard and Classic play types, and some days will also feature Custom game variants. Standard mode closely mimics the single-player experience, while Classic harkens back to older SOCOM titles with increased movement speeds, round-based play, no player respawns and the lack of health regeneration. Our Custom types mix and match a number of game settings, delivering fresh takes on our core rule sets.

The custom game types that we'll be playing are:

    * Sniper Alley: An 8 vs. 8 version of Classic Suppression with higher damage. Weapons are limited to sniper rifles, shotguns, smoke grenades and poison gas.
    * Last Defense Run 'n Gun: Faster movement speed and reduced damage are applied to 16 vs. 16 Last Defense with weapons restricted to only shotguns and SMGs.
    * Scrum: Suppression is given rule tweaks of no respawn, faster movement and higher damage, while sniper rifles, frag grenades, concussion grenades and poison gas are disallowed.
    * Community Day Classic: A medley featuring Classic versions of all four game types (Suppression, Last Defense, Uplink and Bomb Squad) with increased speed and weapon restrictions placed on ranged explosives. Each game type is played over 11 five-minute rounds.

As we're testing specifics elements of the game, we'll be rotating through which modes you'll be able to play each day on a predetermined basis. The schedule for the first week, along with a quick synopsis of what you'll be playing, is as follows:

Tuesday (3/15) -- Suppression and Classic Suppression
Wednesday (3/16) -- Suppression and Classic Suppression
Thursday (3/17) -- Uplink and Classic Uplink
Friday (3/18) -- Last Defense and Classic Last Defense
Saturday (3/19) -- Bomb Squad and Classic Bomb Squad
Sunday (3/20) -- Sniper Alley and Last Defense Run 'n Gun
Monday (3/21) -- Scrum and Community Day Classic

After you've had a chance to play the beta, we'd love to hear your feedback! Once you've downloaded the beta and played a complete match, you'll then gain access to our private beta forums on SOCOM.com where you can share your stories with other players and leave us your feedback. SOCOM has always been a very player-driven franchise and your opinions are very important to us, so please let us know what you think!

For those of you who haven't yet gotten a code to the private portion of the beta and would like to get in sooner than later, we'll be giving away beta codes throughout the beta program via the official SOCOM forums as well as via our Twitter account and Facebook page, so be sure to check those out often.

Get Your Groove On in SOCOM 4

Posted by Chris Roper, Community Specialist, Zipper Interactive Video SOCOM 4

The SOCOM franchise is no stranger to intense online competition, the sort of frantic rivalries that bring out plenty of gloating for the victors. Fans know that the series has catered to these sorts of moments with built-in victory dances, and the soldiers of SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs sure do know their way around the dance floor.

Available in online competitive matches, SOCOM 4's victory dances are triggered by pressing the Circle button while standing over a fallen enemy. There are more than a dozen dances in the game, including:

    The Chicken

Sure to be a hit with fans of Arrested Development, your soldier makes chicken wings with his arms and waves them up and down, bobs his head forward and backward and digs at the dirt with his foot.

    The Robot

Essentially an over-exaggerated version of what it looks like every time C3PO talks.

    The Crane

Exactly like Daniel-son's finishing move from The Karate Kid, the soldier raises both hands into the air, lifts one knee up slowly and then quickly high kicks with the other leg.

    jajajajajajaja victory dance FTW!
